How often should you get a massage?
July 25, 2026 · Find Me Massage Team
Most people who get massages for general stress relief and relaxation do well with one session every four to six weeks. If you're managing a specific issue, like chronic muscle tension, recovering from an injury, or training hard, you'll likely benefit from a tighter schedule, sometimes weekly or biweekly for a stretch, before tapering off to a maintenance routine.
It depends on why you're getting massages
Frequency really comes down to your goal. Someone booking a massage as an occasional treat has very different needs than someone using massage as part of an ongoing pain management or athletic recovery plan.
- •General relaxation and stress relief: every 4 to 6 weeks works well for most people.
- •Chronic tension or pain (like a stiff neck or lower back tightness): weekly or biweekly at first, then spacing out once symptoms improve.
- •Active athletic training: many athletes book a massage every 1 to 2 weeks during heavy training blocks, and less often in the off season.
- •Recovering from a specific injury: follow your therapist's or doctor's recommendation, since the right cadence depends on the injury itself.
- •High stress periods (a demanding work stretch, travel, poor sleep): it's reasonable to book more often temporarily, then pull back once things settle.
Signs you might need to go more often
Pay attention to how your body responds between sessions. If tension or pain fully returns well before your next appointment, that's usually a sign to shorten the gap. If relief lasts comfortably past your next scheduled visit, you can likely stretch the interval out and save some money without losing the benefit.
It's also worth talking to your therapist directly. A therapist who sees you regularly can tell you, based on how your body is actually responding, whether a different frequency makes more sense than whatever schedule you started with.
Budget matters too, and that's fine
Not everyone can afford weekly massage, and that's a completely reasonable constraint to work within. A monthly massage is still meaningfully better than none, especially if you pair it with basic self care between sessions, like stretching, hydration, and paying attention to posture.
