Deep tissue vs. Swedish massage: what's the difference?
July 25, 2026 · Find Me Massage Team
The short version: Swedish massage is lighter and more relaxing, built around long, flowing strokes over the whole body. Deep tissue massage is firmer and more targeted, meant to work into specific areas of chronic tension or tightness. Most people choose based on whether they want to unwind or want a specific problem area addressed.
Swedish massage
Swedish massage is the style most people picture when they think of a classic, relaxing massage. It uses long gliding strokes, kneading, and light to medium pressure across the whole body, and it's designed to promote relaxation, ease general muscle tension, and improve circulation. It's a strong choice if your main goal is stress relief or you're newer to getting regular massages and want to start gently.
Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage uses slower strokes and firmer, more concentrated pressure, working into deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It's typically used to target chronic tightness, knots, or a specific area of pain, like a stiff neck, tight shoulders, or a sore lower back. It can feel more intense than Swedish massage, and it's common to feel a bit sore the following day, similar to how you might feel after a hard workout.
Which one should you book?
- •Want to relax, de-stress, or you're newer to massage: start with Swedish.
- •Have a specific area of chronic tension or pain you want addressed: ask for deep tissue.
- •Not sure: most therapists are happy to blend the two, or adjust pressure in real time based on your feedback during the session.
Whichever you choose, speak up during the session. Pressure preference is personal, and a good therapist will check in and adjust rather than assuming one fixed intensity works for everyone.
